Pack it up! How to Pack for Travel Effectively and Stress-Free
Going anyway for any length of time requires a certain amount of planning, regardless of whether you’re thinking about where to go, how to get there, or what to take with you. Planning is certainly the way forward, and when it comes to your packing needs, planning is the one thing that will ensure you don’t forget something important!
Nobody enjoys the packing process, and if you do, well, you’ve clearly learnt a secret that the rest of us aren’t aware of! Throughout my travel trips to date, I’ve picked up a few tips that have made it more bearable, and I’ve also learnt how to save space and weight as I’ve gone along. I’ve made mistakes, and I’ve ended up bearing the brunt of excess luggage fees, but I’ve learnt!
Let me fill you in on how I manage to pack my things for my travel adventures.
Thinking about what you really need versus what you want is key. I tend to write lists, and then I review them a few days later, when I’ve had time to think about it. I often find that half of what I originally wrote down doesn’t make the cut. Mix and match is the way forward, with simple pieces and layering the ideal way to save space.
I invested in a lightweight suitcase and found it saved me big in terms of weight. This all meant I could take much more, and on that particular holiday it meant I could take several more pairs of shoes!
Consider the luggage you really need
It all depends on where you’re going and how long for, but you need to make sure you’re taking the right kind of luggage for your trip. If you only need a cabin bag, only take that, and don’t bother yourself with large suitcases, and extra cost. Luggage Direct do some great deals on many different types of cases and bags, meaning you can easily tailor your needs to your trip.
Have fun with it!
Making travel part of your break is important, because getting away in any form is a privilege. I enjoy mixing and matching my travel style and theme, and incorporating my luggage into it. It’s not going to help you with your packing, but who cares, have fun with it!
Roll, don’t fold
I was a little sceptical about this at first, but if you roll your clothes instead of folding them you do end up saving a lot of space, and it also helps avoid too much creasing. Give it a try.
Wear your heaviest items
If you’re travelling in winter, you’re going to need heavier items than if you’re heading away in summer. Try and wear your heaviest items if you can, e.g. wear your big coat to travel in, and heaviest boots, to cut down on what you need to pack into your suitcase. You can always take your coat off and store it in the overhead locker once you’re on the plane.
Packing will never be the ultimate idea of fun, but as long as you get the essentials in, the rest can easily be replaced or bought once you arrive at your destination.
