The Most Stylish Footballers
Football and style go together either like hand and glove or like chalk and cheese depending on which particular footballer is trying to carry it off.
And there have been a few fashion howlers over the years – particularly in the eighties. Now in recent years, perhaps David Beckham has been top of the football fashion stakes. Whether you love or hate Beckham’s tattooed style, he is very much a product of the age and helps define fashion for millions of young men the world over.
From today’s crop of players, though, it’s surely today’s pin-up boy Cristiano Ronaldo who leads the pack. The man who many regard as the greatest footballer alive today struts his handsome self for Real Madrid – current Champions League holders and current favourites in the football betting to retain that title – and to win La Liga in Spain.
So this is a man who really has it all. He is perhaps the world’s greatest player and he’s at the world’s biggest club which currently holds the biggest trophy in club football – and are favourites to win it again this season.
You have to feel a bit sorry for him, though; after all, the only way is down from here!
But Ronaldo’s style is very much that of the 1930’s Hollywood matinee idol. His clothes are far smarter and more muted than his predecessor at Manchester United, Mr Beckham – and Ronaldo can often be seen cutting a dash in various TV ads for after shave, watches and the like – suited and booted.
Another player who cuts quite a dash is Manchester United’s Radamel Falcao. Falcao is surely one of the most handsome and most stylish soccer players around today.
The 28 year-old Colombian is at Man United on loan from Monaco, though, and if you can’t look stylish in Monaco when you’re paid a fortune – then there’s something wrong.
Another player who carries it all very stylishly is Claudio Marchisio. The 28 year-old Italian midfielder plays for Juventus as well as the Italian team. And off the pitch, Marchisio’s machismo certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. He’s a very stylish young man and a real hit with the ladies – though this doesn’t exactly make him unique amongst young Italian footballers.
And finally – how about that other man who is the top contender for “world’s greatest footballer” Lionel Messi? Messi’s inclusion on the footballing style shortlist may surprise many people but the little man is capable of looking quite debonair when he wants to do, off the pitch, whilst on it, he’s a wizard!
Of course, Lionel Messi plays club football to such excellent effect for Barcelona and represents his native Argentina at international level. Now he’s not what you’d call conventionally handsome but he certainly has something and he lives and works in yet another city that is one of the most stylish and beautiful on the planet – so quite a bit of style and panache has clearly rubbed off on Messi. He certainly doesn’t live up to his surname as he’s usually immaculately turned out.
